“If Aldar is me, then my Kalmykia is the Mother. She is alive in me as long as I love her as she is, with her beauty and her ugliness, her riches and her misery.”
Ella Manzheeva
The film moves between two worlds: the world of feeling, filmed as the more real one, and the world we call real, which looks symbolic, like a nightmare wrapped around thought. Off-screen music is heard only when Aldar is surrounded by people deafened by noise, who no longer hear what is inside them.
“I want to make this film to remind myself that I can jump onto a horse and ride into the steppe wind at any moment. Because I am the Mother, because I am Kalmykia.”
